Setting Up 14 Sports Coaching: My Journey as a Female Director
My name is Kat Browne, and I’m the Director behind 14 Sports Coaching. Sports have always been a huge part of my life. From childhood kickabouts in the park, attending regular sporting events, working full time in a Post 16 Football Academy or to working as a Community Manager with a local sports provider - the passion has never waned. 10 years working in the sports industry helped me to realise I wanted to create something of my own – a place where young children could thrive, learn, and love sports as much as I do. And so, 14 Sports Coaching was born.
The journey began with a solid business plan, a website, and a lot of outreach to local schools, grassroots clubs and communities. But before any of that, there was the name. "14 Sports Coaching". Why 14? Well, it’s my lucky number. It’s always been there, a quiet little charm in the background of my life - and Theirry Henry’s shirt number at Arsenal! I wanted to weave that personal touch into the company, make it more than just a business, but a bit of me too.
Getting the word out was next. I’m in the process of pounding the pavements - attending local fetes and events, and handing out flyers. Social media became my virtual megaphone, with Facebook, Linked In, X and Instagram posts showcasing what we do. It has been a whirlwind, but seeing those first few contracts come through has been incredibly rewarding.
Running a sports coaching company is a constant juggling act. From scheduling sessions and recruiting coaches, to the endless admin and pumping balls, it's a lot. But seeing the children improve, their faces lit up with joy – that's what makes it all worthwhile.
Navigating the Landscape as a Female Director
Being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field has its challenges. There’s often that extra hurdle to jump, that need to prove yourself a bit more. I’ve had to push for recognition and respect, but it's made me more determined, not less. And honestly, I think it’s important to show young children that women can lead and excel in sports coaching.
Balancing work and personal life is another tightrope walk. You have to be organised, learn to delegate, and carve out time for yourself. It’s a learning curve, but it’s manageable.
Tips for Aspiring Female Directors
If you're a woman considering starting your own sports coaching venture, here's some advice from my experience:
Let Your Passion Drive You: Genuine enthusiasm for sports is vital. It’s what will inspire the children and keep you going when things get tough.
Create a Robust Business Plan: Outline your mission, target audience, pricing, and marketing strategies. It’s your roadmap to success.
Build a Network: Connect with other women in business. There are fantastic networks out there for female entrepreneurs. Share experiences, seek advice, and build a support system.
Don't Hesitate to Ask for Help: Mentors, friends, and family can offer invaluable support. Don’t be afraid to lean on them.
Believe in Your Abilities: Self-belief is crucial. You’re capable of achieving your goals.
I'm incredibly proud of 14 Sports Coaching. Starting a sports coaching company is demanding, but it’s incredibly rewarding. With passion, determination, and a good plan, you can make your dream a reality.
Remember, building a successful business takes time and perseverance. Stay focused, keep learning, and don't give up.
